Florida lawmaker wants teachers to grade parents (Part.2)
Veita Stephens, an academic intervention facilitator for Polk County Public Schools, called the proposal a "unique notion."
"The thought has never entered my mind to grade a parent," she said.
Teachers agree that parental involvement is crucial to a child's education. But some teachers say that grading the parents is not the answer.
Sharon Francis, who teaches first grade in the small central Florida city of Winter Haven, is not sure that grading parents will work.
"I think those parents that are not going to show up or not do anything," said Francis, who teaches students from primarily poor homes, "it's not going to faze them, whether you put 'unsatisfactory.' "
The grading system is based on three criteria that Stargel wrote in the legislation:
• A child should be at school on time, prepared to learn after a good night's sleep, and have eaten a meal.
• A child should have the homework done and prepared for examinations.
• There should be regular communication between the parent and teacher.
"Those three things are key to a quality education," Stargel said.
Steve Perry, a CNN education contributor and founder of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, says he couldn't disagree more.
Perry insists that a good education is based on what a child learns in the classroom and not what a parent might know that could help their child.

Japan to face Australia in Asian Cup final (Part.2)
Yuto Nagamoto latched onto Keisuke Honda's through ball and squared for Ryoichi Maeda to level the tie up at 1-1.
South Korea enjoyed the best of the second half and went close when Koo Ja-cheol hit the side-netting with a low shot before Lee Yong-rae's free kick flashed narrowly wide of the target.
As the game moved into extra time Japan upped the tempo and were rewarded when Shinji Okazaki was felled in the area by Hwang Jae-won. The striker's penalty was saved by Jung Sung-Ryong but substitute Hajime Hosogai made no mistake from the rebound.
Though South Korea laid siege to Japan's goal in the closing stages they couldn't fashion an opportunity to level. But right on the full time whistle Hwang Jae-won slammed home a loose ball after a scramble in the area.
South Korea's joy was short lived though, as they missed all three of their penalties -- Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima making two fine saves -- which left Yasuyuki Konno to convert the winning penalty and spark wild scenes of celebration.

Google to launch Groupon competitor (Part.2)
From what we can tell, Google Offers will be powered by Google Checkout. It also includes Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Google Buzz and e-mail sharing options.
Google is actively reaching out to businesses now to get them on board with Offers. It even apparently has a writing team in place to craft the write-up for offers.
Google famously tried to buy Groupon for $6 billion just a few months ago in order to bolster its local advertising business. Groupon rejected the offer though and is instead preparing for a $15 billion IPO.
The search giant clearly isn't giving this market up without a fight, though. With its vast reach, huge resources and brand recognition, it could prove to be a powerful player in the space.
We're going to be watching these developments closely. Look here to see the entire fact sheet Google is sending to local businesses:
Google has responded to our inquiry and sent us the following statement:

Why did Google's Eric Schmidt step down?(Part.2)
"Schmidt has to carry all of these past statements along with him no matter what he does," Sullivan said.
A writer for the Business Review Canada magazine came to a similar conclusion.
Fortune's Copeland suggested the management change are being made to alleviate tensions between Schmidt and Google's two co-founders.
"Eric's point of view didn't necessarily jibe with theirs all the time, and that's where the friction arose -- in China, in privacy matters in Europe," he said. "You got the sense that Larry and Sergey had one side and Eric had the other. Maybe Larry and Sergey, they just wanted to run the show themselves."
Page, who will turn 38 about a week before taking over, invented the original formula for Google's effective and secret online search algorithm while studying at Stanford University. Called PageRank, it employs computer robots to crawl the Web for clues in content that can signal how websites are connected.
The often-outspoken Brin, his former Stanford colleague and longtime business partner, will focus efforts on unannounced new products. During Thursday's conference call, Brin was brimming with excitement about these projects and boasted about his success so far in keeping things under wraps.
Schmidt has served as a sort of father figure in business to the pair of younger visionaries who developed the search engine. He is credited with pushing Google into new territories and helping to drive the moneymaking side of the business, elevating Google to be the world's largest online advertiser.
During Schmidt's tenure, Google also bought video-sharing site YouTube and branched out into other areas. The company launched Internet services for e-mail, Web browsing, office productivity and photo-sharing. More recently, Google has ventured into mobile phones, TV software and e-books.
Google's Android operating system for mobile devices has been a huge hit, adopted by many smartphone and tablet manufacturers. But the company's attempts at launching social-networking tools, Google Buzz and Google Wave, never caught on.
Schmidt also is said to have spearheaded Google's controversial move into China, where it launched a search engine in 2006. But after China asked Google to censor search results for sensitive topics, such as Tibet, the company pulled out most of its operations there last year.

Thousands in peril in Brazil flooding (Part 2)
With more rains forecast, Brazilian authorities have ordered evacuations for at least 5,000 families living in especially perilous areas in Rio de Janeiro state, Agencia Brasil said.
Another 3,000 families from a mountainous region were homeless and sheltered in schools and gymnasiums, the news agency said.
"The most important thing right now is to assist the homeless population and reach the most critical points," said Rodrigo Neves, the state secretary of Social Welfare and Human Rights.
State health officials pleaded for people to donate blood that will be sent to the Serrana region where only 36 units of blood remained for treatment of flood victims.
The death toll for the state of Rio climbed Thursday to 495, with 214 in Nova Friburgo, 222 in Teresopolis and 40 in Petropolis, according to Civil Defense numbers. Another 19 deaths occurred in Sumidouro, according to Agencia Brasil.
In Teresopolis, schools and police stations served as morgues where people waited to identify their family and friends. Mayor Jorge Mario Sedlacek declared his city a natural disaster area.
In neighboring Sao Paulo, at least 24 people died as heavy rain continued to batter parts of the state, authorities said.

Portugal move eases Europe debt crisis (Part 2)
French government officials refused to comment, but people close to the government said it was unlikely Portugal would have to seek help from the European financial stability facility, the European Union's bail-out fund, in the next 15 days, but said it remained to be seen whether the upbeat market signals were temporary.
Surviving without a bail-out?The debt issue was also greeted with relief by the European Central Bank, which is thought to have intervened in the Portuguese government bond market before Wednesday's operation.
By containing Lisbon's borrowing costs, the ECB -- which holds its first interest-rate setting meeting of 2011 on Thursday -- has been able to prevent some of the gloomiest market fears about the eurozone from becoming self-fulfilling. But it will be anxious to see eurozone leaders building on the momentum.
The ECB has not put overt pressure on Lisbon to accept a bail-out, but Jean-Claude Trichet, president, has urged eurozone governments to take whatever steps necessary to restore confidence in Europe's 12-year-old monetary union.
But politicians and economists warned that Lisbon might still be forced to turn to the EFSF if bond yields remained at current levels.

It's not just t-t-t-telephones for Lady Gaga. (Part 2)
The presentation took place at Polaroid's booth on the trade show floor at CES. Canon -- a competitor -- had a booth and large ads set up within view.
The Polaroid GL20 image-capturing sunglasses, which are a protoype, store photos on a chip in the earpiece of the glasses. Lady Gaga said she had a heavy hand in designing the frames, which sat on a gold mannequin during the short presentation. The over-size glasses covered a good half of the mannequin's face, coming almost down to its lips.
"You can come to one of my shows and wear them," she said. "Take pictures of me dancing on stage."
The GL10 printer, available for $150 in March, connects to phones via Bluetooth, allowing for on-the-go prints. (It doesn't work yet for the iPhone, a fact that, when revealed by Gaga, got boos and cheers from the audience).
The GL30 camera, which will be out by the holiday season, takes both digital and Polaroid prints. A future version will connect to the internet so the shots can be uploaded to social media sites. This version does not, she said.
"I think it's sexy, it's sleek and it's hearty," she said. "It's not heavy but it feels good in your hand."

The Next Big Thing In Social Media
On the latest episode of The Office, temp Ryan founds his own social media startup, WUPHF. The service purportedly sends a message to friends on all their channels, Facebook, chat, SMS and Twitter. It even prints out a ¡Æwuphf¡Ç (pronounced ¡Èwoof,¡É the sitcom¡Çs version of a ¡Ætweet¡Ç) on the nearest printer. Well it turns out WUPHF.com is real. Sort of.

The website exists, and you can even attempt to sign up for the service and get sent a wuphf. I tried to do so to see how far the charade would actually go. Disappointingly, I wasn¡Çt able to get a wuphf sent to my Twitter account or mobile phone. For my Facebook account, the website gave me a pop-up message: ¡ÈFACEBOOK: WUPHF is unable to post due to lame Facebook privacy policy.¡É Touche. I did get an email from ¡ÈRyan Howard¡É at ry@wuphf.com, saying I had been signed up for the service, however.

The rest of the website features goodies like the ¡ÈAbout¡É page, with a message to potential investors that name-checks successful technology companies like Google and Microsoft.

Have you seen the film The Social Network? Well this site is every bit as good as that movie. Not only is this company going to earn you crazy money, I guarantee it, it will also give you the opportunity to get on the ground floor of something big! Looking back, don¡Çt you wish you bought Google stock back in 2002? Don¡Çt you regret not buying Microsoft bonds back in the early 90s? Now¡Çs your chance to right all the wrongs of your past – invest in WUPHF today.

Sky Nellor Looks For The One On Bravo Show
Even ex-models-turned-djs have trouble with looking for ¡ÈThe One¡É. And, Sky Nellor is no exception. The millionaire spinner recently appeared on Bravo¡Çs ¡ÈThe Million Matchmaker¡É to try her luck at finding someone she can be with forever.

Sky had a pleasant enough episode, and she ended up going out with one of the prospects, Kevin. But, the date didn¡Çt pave the way for Sky to start looking at white, wedding gowns or listen to bridal church music. A lot of people were disappointed, and so many speculations were raised. Either Sky doesn¡Çt really dance to the tune of happily-ever-afters, or Kevin can¡Çt level with Sky¡Çs exes (think Adrian Brody and Jamie Foxx).

So, apparently, Sky would not be strutting around town with a new man on her arm soon. She¡Çll continue to be inside a dj¡Çs booth with her turntable.

Messy Mya Death Photos Could Help Solve the Case
Messy Mya Death Photos Could Help Solve the Case: As we have reported earlier about Messy Mya¡Çs Death Photos until now no actual death photos have gone out.

Many sites have posted report about Messy Mya Death Photo but they are the same Photos and those have nothing to do with the 22 years old New Orleans based singer and Youtube sensation who was reportedly shot dead during his girlfriend¡Çs baby shower.

The Death photos of the singer Messy Mya were allegedly posted on a social media networking site Twitter where people could easily repost them.

Fans of the singers are in an outrage over what they see to be a gross form of disrespect from Internet users.

Until now authorities have no clues about the suspects and family and fans have considered that police could be using those Messy Mya death pictures to help solve his murder. Read our previous report on Messy Mya Death Photo Murder Case

Lucky Strike Bowling Boss Goes Undercover
The CEO of the very famous Lucky Strike Bowling corporation recently guested in CBS¡Ç top-rating show Undercover Boss. And for Steven Forster, it was a meditative, eye-opening experience.

Forster¡Çs Undercover Boss episode was hailed as one of the best episodes of the show. Unlike other disguised executives who had to do manual labor in the show, Forster presented a sincere expression of happiness and joy for having had to find out how the ¡Èunsung heroes¡É of his mega-successful bowling company work.

Forster donned a bowling pin costume and encouraged families and partygoers to go and play in the bowling alley. Doing that, he earned the admiration of his ¡Èboss¡É. VersaEmerge¡Çs Sierra Kosterbeck on Warped, Girls and Poop Jokes
Ever since her days in Fort Pierce, FL VersaEmerge¡Çs Sierra Kosterbeck has wanted to sing. Always one to look for inspiration, she explored the idea of being in a rockabilly band because of the Straycats and then switched her focus when she fell for Sublime. But thanks bands like Saosin, she found her way into what she does now, fronting a band on Warped Tour.

At 19 I was finishing my first year of college. Sierra¡Çs traveling the country on doing what she loves. She left high school to follow her dreams. I mean if I did that maybe I¡Çd be married to Nick Carter today. Starting out at 17, she learned the age you start touring is the age you stay forever, but at the same time the road does force you to grow up in a lot of ways. Now all Sierra can say is ¡ÈWhat the fuck is going on?¡É when she thinks about fans waiting at their tent to take pictures with them.

I liked this girl because we have one major thing in common, we can¡Çt stand being around emotion driven females. Maybe that¡Çs her reason for being the only one in VersaEmerge along with Blake Harnage and Devin Ingelido. Being a woman in the rock world is ¡Èthe coolest thing ever.¡É Sierra isn¡Çt one of those high maintenance girls. Sierra even said the dudes take longer to get ready than her. Well Devin and Blake better not take their sweet time and be late to the Glamour Kills Stage where they¡Çll be controlling the crowds every move with songs from their full length album, Fixed At Zero.

Yahoo! Goes Down Because of ¡ÈServer Hangup¡É
As if Carol Bartz is not dealing with enough trouble these days, today, the frontpage of Yahoo! went down because of a ¡Èserver hangup¡É. The company made an official announcement on Twitter, but only after people on Twitter & Facebook broke reported on the Yahoo! outage.

Trying to access yahoo.com today lead to several error messages that include ¡Èserver hangup¡É or ¡Èconnection refused¡É. At least it was good to know that Yahoo! Mail (which is probably on different servers) wasn¡Çt affected — it worked if you went directly to mail.yahoo.com.

The whole thing lasted for approximately 40 minutes, and as many have said, it¡Çs probably the first Yahoo outage we¡Çve seen. Yeah we¡Çve seen services down, but this is probably the first time the .com goes down (or at least we don¡Çt remember it) — anyone correct us if we¡Çre wrong.

Yahoo spokesperson Kryssa Guntrum stated via e-mail, ¡ÈFor a brief period this afternoon, Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users. We have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected.

The outage comes after rumors that AOL is gearing up to takeover Yahoo!, which is why we¡Çre already hearing jokes about it. ¡ÈMaybe they took down Yahoo.com to put an AOL logo on it? Oh wait, this must be what Prince¡Çs press conference is about! Internet¡Çs over!¡É, Anil Dash said in a tweet.

Right now everything is fine at our end. Have you had or still have issues with Yahoo?

Bobby Cox
But all those things happened as the manager of the Atlanta Braves took the team from worst to first, gave Atlanta a World Series champion and reeled off the string of 14 straight division titles. While a Southern city strove for major league status of its own, the man running its baseball team provided object lessons in management on a nightly basis.

That all ended Monday night, when the San Francisco Giants eliminated the Braves from the National League Division Series, winning Game 4 x-x and sending Cox into retirement at age 69. A four-time manager of the year, he finished with 2,504 victories, fourth most in history.

During Cox's watch, Atlanta slowly shed its "Loserville" reputation. The Falcons went to the Super Bowl. Evander Holyfield won the world heavyweight boxing title four times. A dark horse group pulled off a bid to host the 1996 Olympics.

But while Atlanta was transforming how the world perceived it, Cox also was changing how Atlantans perceived themselves. Not just the baseball fans either. Students, families, even businessmen.

¡ÈAtlanta, as much as it was a sports city before Ivan Allen helped build Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and attracted the Braves from Milwaukee, it wasn¡Çt a sophisticated sports town,¡É said Joel Koblentz, 61, senior partner at The Koblentz Group, which specializes in executive and board recruiting.

¡ÈIt¡Çs clear that in order to attract business to a city, having all the amenities is important, like professional sports teams, good roads and education, etc. The Braves were able to shine a light on Atlanta in a way that¡Çs been sustainable for long periods of time unlike the Olympics, which was only short-term. Bobby Cox was very much a part of that.¡É

Jessica Marotta Joseph Cerniglia Kitchen Nightmares Affair
Jessica Marotta Joseph Cerniglia Kitchen Nightmares Affair – Joseph Cerniglia, a restaurant owner that had appeared on Gordon Ramsay¡Çs ¡ÈKitchen Nightmares¡É reality show committed suicide last week. It was not clear why he committed suicide when his body was found floating in the Hudson River, but it was soon discovered that he had jumped off of the George Washington Bridge. Recent reports have stated that the married father of three was having an affair with a 27 year old pastry chef named Jessica Marotta.

His death was a national story because he was the second person to appear on a Gordon Ramsay show to kill himself. Some had speculated that his appearance on the reality TV show could have contributed to his death. Gordon Ramsay is known for being extra vicious to his guests on his shows. At the time, he helped him to get his restaurant out of debt and back on its feet.

Reportedly, Cerniglia and Marotta were dating for a very short period of time, and the couple was in love. Marotta¡Çs mother has said that her daughter was devastated by the death.

Sources that were close with both parties have said that they made no attempt to hide their affair, and that it seemed fairly obvious ¡Èby the way that they interacted with each other.¡É It will be interesting to see what Cerniglia¡Çs wife has to say about the situation now that the information regarding the affair has gone public.

NFL Player Found Dead
Denver Bronco fans could not believe it when they heard the news but it is true. Denver Bronco¡Çs NFL player Kenny McKinley was found dead at his home on Monday from what looks to be like an apparent suicide attempt. Police were alerted to the situation when they received a call that the dead body of a male was found on the second floor master bedroom by deputies of the Arapahoe County sheriff¡Çs department, and the body was later identified as McKinley.

McKinley, who played wide receiver on the Denver Bronco¡Çs team, was found dead at his home on Monday, and the incident looks like an apparent suicide because of the gun wound looks as though it has been self inflicted. Even though it may appear as such, authorities still say they are carrying out an investigation to find out if this is in fact the NFL star¡Çs cause of death.

The Bronco¡Çs team was deeply shocked and saddened over the news of McKinley¡Çs death, according to a statement that the Denver¡Çs President and CEO Pat Bowlen issued on the team¡Çs website. Bowlen said that McKinley will be greatly missed as part of the Bronco¡Çs family.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels went on to say that the death of McKinley was a tragic one indeed, especially as he had such a promising future ahead of him. They expressed their condolences for the family of McKinley and said that the team¡Çs prayers will be with the family of McKinley during this no doubt difficult period.

Strange new world for GOP
Michael Grimm's landslide victory over Michael Allegretti in Tuesday's GOP congressional primary could be the death knell for former Rep. Vito Fossella's influence over the Staten Island Republican Party and could sweep out the GOP leadership here.

"The horse is past glue," said City Councilman James Oddo (R-Mid-Island/Brooklyn), who is planning a Borough Hall run in 2013. "It's been beaten to death. What more evidence do you need that the party needs change, from the chairman on down to its whole vibe?"

Oddo, who did not make an endorsement in the primary, said he "fully expects" to back Grimm.

But it remains to be seen whether borough GOP chairman John Friscia will face a challenge next year, when he is up for re-election as leader. Oddo said he would "let other people talk about" the intra-party ramifications of the Grimm victory.

Attorney Robert Scamardella pondered challenging Friscia last year but said yesterday he is currently focused on the Grimm campaign.

"The only political plans I have are to work hard for Republicans between now and November," said Scamardella, president of the Molinari Republican Club. "I don't rule anything out for the future."

Former Borough President Guy Molinari, a Grimm supporter, already has called on the GOP leadership to step aside in the wake of Allegretti's defeat.

"It's a rebuilding process," said Conservative Borough President James Molinaro, who has run with GOP support and has helped elect Republican candidates here for decades. "There's nothing there."

But "the purpose of a primary is to determine a slate of candidates," said Friscia, who backed Allegretti in the primary. "That slate has been determined. Our job now is to put divisiveness and personal attacks aside and win election in November."

When asked if he would now support Grimm, Friscia said, "I haven't been asked by the Grimm camp to do anything."

Maroney dealt to the Broncos
The Patriots severed ties with former first-round pick Laurence Maroney yesterday, shipping the oft-confounding running back to the Denver Broncos.

In exchange for Maroney¡Çs services and their own sixth-round pick in 2011, the Patriots received the Broncos¡Ç fourth-round pick next year.

Efforts to reach Maroney were unsuccessful.

The trade marks the end of a less-than-perfect relationship between the Patriots and Maroney, the 21st overall pick in 2006 out of Minnesota who often struggled between what came naturally to him as a running back and what the Patriots wanted him to do.

There were also injury issues — Maroney didn¡Çt play a full season in his four years with the team — and a belief within the organization that he didn¡Çt mature and wasn¡Çt as conscientious as it would have liked, never doing all of the little things and extra things that can make a big difference for backs.

Heading to Denver apparently was meant to be for Maroney, who is in the fi nal year of his five-year rookie contract. When he came out of Minnesota, former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan very nearly drafted him, telling the Rocky Mountain News before the Broncos¡Ç 2006 meeting with the Patriots that when Denver looked at Maroney, ¡ÈWe thought he had everything.

But he was taken by New England, and for one season, Maroney and Corey Dillon made quite a tandem. The hard-running veteran welcomed Maroney¡Çs arrival; Dillon was able to become more of a red-zone back that year, scoring 13 touchdowns, while the shifty rookie liked to work in space.

The two combined for 1,557 yards and 19 scores on 374 carries.

Jonathan Storm: Celebrating Teddy and Tammi
Hardly "unsung" in these parts, singers Pendergrass and Terrell are celebrated in entertaining profiles.

What are Teddy Pendergrass and Tammi Terrell doing on a show about underappreciated musical stars?

Four thousand people turned out to mourn and celebrate Teddy Pendergrass at Philadelphia's Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church after he died Jan. 13. With that many fans at his funeral alone, and eight gold or platinum albums, he nonetheless turns up on the season premiere of Unsung Monday at 10 p.m. on cable's TV One. (Comcast Channel 75 in Philadelphia and most Pennsylvania suburbs; Channel 173 in most New Jersey cable systems.)

The series follows up Sept. 20 with another one-hour documentary on another not-so-obscure child of North Philadelphia, Tammi Terrell, whose duets with Marvin Gaye are some of Motown's best (and best-known) records.

But let us not question the choices of a program that gives us entertaining and informative profiles - each with at least a smattering of historic performance film - of a couple of very bright stars who were dealt difficult hands. Brain cancer killed Terrell, after eight surgeries, when she was 24, and most people, in this region at least, know that Pendergrass spent the second half of his life in a wheelchair after a 1982 car crash on Lincoln Drive.

Pendergrass' outrageous sex appeal comes through even on the grainy film. "He made women feel a certain kind of way," says singer/actor Tyrese Gibson, who sang at the funeral and was among those trying to generate interest in a TP biopic. "I don't think anybody's been able to do it since."

Pendergrass' "ladies only" concerts in the late '70s and early '80s were legendary. The gals went wild. Underwear littered the stage. By contemporary standards, his attire and sexy moves were relatively chaste, but he was a gorgeous hunk of man with an alluring smile, he sold his bedroom songs with every muscle, and he had a way of persuading each woman in the audience that he was singing just to her.

And could he sing.

"My ears went up like a Doberman pischer's," says Leon Huff, half of Philadelphia's music writing and producing team Gamble & Huff, describing his response when he heard the man, who had been hired as a drummer, unleash his bodacious baritone for the group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

Musicians who worked with the stars, either directly or nearby, offer insider insight in both films to match the marvelous performances.

Lloyd Parks, drummer for the Blue Notes, with which Pendergrass got his first national fame ("If You Don't Know Me by Now," "The Love I Lost"), discusses bandleader Melvin's distress as TP sang him to the sidelines.

Kenny Gamble turns up in the documentary, too, along with WDAS's Mimi Brown and other local lights who provide commentary and historical information with the performances.

A different local radio personality, Jerry Blavat, the ageless Geator, lends his voice to the Terrell biography, joined by her sister, Ludie Montgomery; Richard Harner, Terrell's neurologist; and other Philadelphians.

Otis Williams, the backup-singing Temptation who was the leader of the group, talks about Terrell's stormy relationship with lead singer David Ruffin. The movie refutes gossip that beatings from Ruffin and James Brown, with whom she worked while still in high school, led to her death.

In a short time, Terrell accomplished a lot. "Her personality was just as big as life," says Supreme Mary Wilson. She was also smart, spending two years as a premed major at the University of Pennsylvania on full scholarship before going to Motown when she was 20.

And hot.

Says Nick Ashford, who, with his wife and partner, Valerie Simpson, wrote three of Marvin and Tammi's biggest hits, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need to Get By" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing": "She was a very sexy woman, and she could purr her way through anything."

But not through a brain tumor: Sadly, Harner recounts how she faced her medical travails with energy and determination.

Unsung or not, these two stars and exceptional people deserve TV profiles. The movies on Unsung may not be as glittery or finely made as most of those on PBS or HBO, but they are satisfying - perfect to watch with kids who think 50 Cent or Whitney Houston invented African American pop music.

MTV VMAS: Taylor, Kanye and a meat dress
There were no unscripted interruptions during Sunday's curiously sedate MTV Video Music Awards. But Taylor Swift and Kanye West were again responsible for the show's buzziest moments.
Swift performed new song Wasn't It Easy, a dramatic (and, yes, off-key) ode to West. Last year, he jumped onstage and grabbed the microphone during her acceptance speech, which resulted in an intense backlash.
Grainy, black-and-white footage of the dustup preceded Swift's appearance.
"Who you are is not what you did," a barefoot Swift warbled. "You're still an innocent."
The song, from Swift's upcoming Speak Now album, might have had more impact if it was angrier.
West himself closed the show with Runaway, a thunderous homage to "jerks" and "scumbags." It was an effective, if immature, celebration of (likely his own) bad behavior.
Lady Gaga, nominated for a record-breaking 13 awards, nabbed video of the year for Bad Romance. She accepted the award in a (hopefully fake) meat dress from a stunningly in-shape Cher, recreating her If I Could Turn Back Time look.
Gaga announced the name of her upcoming album, Born This Way, and sang a snippet of the title track. She also took home seven more trophies, including best female, collaboration, pop and dance video -- and thanked her "little monsters" and gay fans.
Host Chelsea Handler started strong with a skit featuring jailbird Lindsay Lohan and a Gaga spoof. But the scripted jokes quickly became unfunny and obvious. There were also adequate, if uneventful, performances from B.o.B and Hayley Williams, Linkin Park and Usher, who seems to have been doing the same thing for the past 10 years.
Thankfully, an intense Eminem kicked off the performances with Not Afraid and Love The Way You Lie, his duet with Rihanna. The rapper earned best male and hip-hop video awards but left the building immediately after his performance.
The Jersey Shore cast reared its tanned torsos throughout the show, and best new artist Justin Bieber offered an energetic outdoor performance.
It was all routinely random -- and rarely exciting.

'Here You Have' Virus Goes Global
A global e-mail virus called ¡ÈHere You Have," a reference to the subject line of the e-mail, attacked organizations including NASA, Comcast, AIG, Disney, Proctor & Gamble, Florida Department of Transportation and Wells Fargo by spamming the inboxes of employees and spreading through the contacts of affected accounts

Those who opened the e-mail Thursday reported that the body of the e-mail simply says, ¡ÈHello: This is The Document I told you about, you can find it here.¡É

The e-mail includes a link to what appears to be a pdf document, but clicking on that link releases a virus.

¡ÈIn reality, it¡Çs a piece of malware that¡Çs obfuscating as a pdf,¡É said Dmitri Alperovitch, vice president of Threat Research for the security giant McAfee. ¡ÈIt has the capabilities to spread virally once it¡Çs installed on your machine.¡É

On Tuesday, Adobe acknowledged that there are vulnerabilities in the Adobe reader software, which may explain why the hackers chose to use a .pdf file.

McAfee is investigating the attack, and confirmed that the virus struck several corporations around the globe, though it would not comment on exactly how widespread the damage is.

The Department of Homeland Security is also investigating and trying to contain the virus, which struck several federal agencies.

Meanwhile, several employees tweeted Thursday afternoon as they watched their e-mail lists go wild.

¡ÈWatching a virus break out through email on a NASA Distribution list¡Ä hilarious¡Ä¡É said one amused employee, who later went on to post ¡È¡Äthis thing is quickly spreading like a wildfire.¡É

Alan Peppard on Kim Kardashian, Miles Austin, Nancy Pelosi and Cafe Pacific
The Dallas Cowboys' season opener is still five days away and already our Kardashian cup runneth over. (Reminder: Send thank-you note to Miles A.) Kim Kardashian, the curvy queen of reality TV, was in Dallas to see her wide-receiver boyfriend, Miles Austin, and the Dallas Cowboys play the Miami Dolphins at Cowboys Stadium Thursday night.

Headquartered at the Rosewood Crescent hotel, Kim turned up Friday at Stanley Korshak, the high-end department store in the Crescent.

Korshak owner and general manager Crawford Brock was happy to take time out of his busy schedule to personally escort the celebrity around the store. (Big surprise.)

In unrelated Stanley Korshak news: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi also made a shopping excursion there while in town to headline a Democratic fundraising dinner. Korshak is definitely a Pelosi kind of place – not because of her politics, but because of her bankbook. The speaker is one of the wealthiest members of Congress.

According to an analysis of financial disclosure documents by The Hill newspaper, Speaker Pelosi's net worth rose last year by $9 million to a (very conservative) estimate of $21.7 million.

By contrast, her orange-skinned nemesis John Boehner saw his net worth rise $100,000. The House Minority Leader's total net worth is estimated at $1.8 million.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of Cafe Pacific, owner Jack Knox has remodeled the interior of his Highland Park Village landmark.

Observed one Cafe Pacific regular: "It's the new-old Mansion."

High praise indeed. In the '80s and '90s, the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek had the see-and-be-seen vibe that attracted the city's power menagerie.

Today, Cafe Pacific is the Dallas equivalent of the Grill Room at the Four Seasons in New York – the place where the oligarchs go to exchange the secret flat-taxers handshake.

Country stars Alan Jackson and Jack Ingram won't be the only entertainers at the Oct. 9 Cattle Baron's Ball.

Cattle Baron's chairman Kristi Sherrill Hoyl has booked the Tyler Junior College Apache Belles to perform some of their precision dance numbers at the gala in honor of longtime Cattle Baron's benefactor Annette Simmons and her billionaire husband, Harold Simmons. You see, in her pre-billionaire years in East Texas, Annette was an Apache Belle.

This year's gala will be at Southfork Ranch with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

PLAYER RATINGS
ENGLAND overcame ten-man Switzerland 3-1 thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Adam Johnson and Darren Bent.

Check out our player ratings and let you know if you agree or disagree with any of them by using the feedback form below.

JOE HART 6: Took the applause of the visiting fans well...which was all about he had to take all night - apart from Xherdan Shaqiri's stunner out of the net. Otherwise, looked his usual confident, commanding self. A reassuring presence.

GLEN JOHNSON 6: One of his more consistent evenings - which means he was only mildly inconsistent. Looked a little hesitant to get forward but was pretty solid when defensive duties called. Still doesn't convince.

JOLEON LESCOTT 7: Strong and composed after getting the nod ahead of Gary Cahill to replace Michael Dawson. Some feared the Manchester City man could be a weak link, particularly as he has been playing full-back for Manchester City, but he was quickly into his stride. Vindicated Capello's decision to opt for his experience of playing with Jagielka at Everton.

PHIL JAGIELKA 6: The most mobile of England's central defensive options but not exactly adventurous in terms of distribution. Will face bigger tests and the jury is still out on whether he is true international class.

ASHLEY COLE 8: Quite possibly the most consistently effective international defender over the last decade. Ever seen him have a bad game? Impossible to get by and always provides a potent attacking option.

THEO WALCOTT 6: Sparkled for his fifteen minutes of fitness. May not always choose the correct option but puts the entire back four on edge. Can only hope his right ankle injury does not keep him out for long and is not another illustration of his fragile nature.

STEVEN GERRARD 9: No Rio, no JT, no Becks, no Frank, so Gerrard stands alone as team leader. And he is revelling in the role. The armband fits him snugly, the central position his natural domain. Led by example. Capello has to make captaincy permanent.

GARETH BARRY 6: Disciplined, determined but occasionally dormant. A good foil for Gerrard and carried out some diligent defensive work. Mobility is still an issue but his partnership with his captain has proved an effective one.

JAMES MILNER 7: Ronseal. He is what it says on the tin. Energetic and mostly effective. Don't bank on him to go past defenders but do bank on him to use possession wisely. Not a game-winner but useful against this sort of mediocre opposition.

JERMAIN DEFOE 6: After the Lord Mayor's Show. Created and thumped a decent chance in the first half but otherwise was a rogue cog in the England machine. Another injury victim in the second half - 'Arry won't be 'appy.

WAYNE ROONEY 8: Inevitable that he would respond to his personal crisis with a goal. Low-key celebrations but he clearly relished the challenge of playing in such trying circumstances. Still key to England success.

PS3 update 3.42 available for download
The PS3 Firmware Update 3.42 is now available. If you want to access PlayStation Network or the PlayStation Store you must download it since it is a mandatory. The PS3 Firmware Update 3.42 arrives only one month after the 3.41 version and two months after 3.40 versions. This has now started to upset users since it doesn¡Çt add any extra functionality contained within these most recent firmware updates.

The PS3 Firmware Update 3.42 is created mainly to restrain any opportunity for the PS3 to be jailbreaked or hacked. Thus it will be easier to sustain the PS3 as the only console that cannot play pirated games. The firmware update became available a few hours ago and reports says that Sony¡Çs extra security measures are the most important purpose of the update.

Users of the PS3 might be frustrated with PS3 Firmware Update 3.42 as it does not include anything new, but players should be aware that Sony¡Çs stand on piracy means that games developers make more money meaning they have more possibility to produce original games.

Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch Show Winner
An American reality television series ¡ÆOchocinco: The Ultimate Catch¡Ç announced the winner ¡ÆRubi¡Ç. This series broadcasted on VH1 starring Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. This show is about 85 girls which were placed with Chad to choose from to find love. In the first episode of the show, he eliminated 69 girls.

With only two ladies left, who is going to be Chad¡Çs ultimate catch? Whether she will be Britney or it will be Rubi. Chad Ochocinco has to make his final touchdown!

Before the finale, with the four remaining girls Chad groups a relaxing mixer of his brother and a few of his closest friends. With all four girls the guys had one on one time and as usual Tara joked around. Tiphani got eliminated because of only of not saying too much.

That was a surprising elimination before the elimination of Tiphani. After that Chad gathered the girls for dinner and he tried to have another serious moment with Tara. He gave her one last time to show her serious side, but she refused and as a result she was eliminated on the spot.

When Britney woke up and saw Tara¡Çs bed still empty at that time she was traumatized. Certainly, she thought Tara was still with Chad, but she was sent home.

Chad¡Çs mother made a brief appearance before the elimination process. While Tara was already gone and coincide Britney was automatically selected for the next round. On the other hand it was down to Tiphani and Rubi. Chad asked to men that How they felt about Rubi? they all gave good responses, and in the end it was Rubi who made it to the final round.

Rubi should be his Ultimate Catch because Chad only has a thing for blondes. He liked her since first day. She was the first one he set his eyes on and then came Tara. Tara is already gone; consequently, Rubi it is!

Oil Rig Explosion Photos: Mariner Energy Platform Burns
Boats shoot water onto the Vermilion 380-A oil-and-gas platform Thursday. Owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy, the rig had exploded into flames in the Gulf of Mexico (map) earlier that day—135 days after the BP oil rig explosion that resulted in millions of barrels of crude being spilled into the Gulf.

The fire on the shallow-water oil rig, which sits about 80 miles (130 kilometers) off Louisiana, was extinguished Thursday afternoon, at which time the cause of the Mariner Energy oil-rig fire remained unknown.

All 13 workers on the platform had donned protective suits and taken to the water after the oil rig caught fire. About two hours later a rig-supply boat rescued the Mariner Energy employees. No serious injuries have been reported, according to the New York Times.

A press release from Mariner Energy stated that no oil leaks had been found as of Thursday afternoon. At the same time the U.S. Coast Guard, contradicting an earlier statement, reported no oily sheen around the Mariner Energy rig.

Ships douse a Mariner Energy oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico to extinguish a fire that started early Thursday.

The fixed platform's base is 340 feet (103 meters) underwater, much shallower than the 5,000-foot (1500-meter) depth of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, a once floating rig that now rests on the Gulf seafloor after an oil rig explosion in April.

Lee Hunt, the president of the International Association of Drilling Contractors, told ABC News that the Mariner Energy platform "doesn't have a drilling rig on it, it's essentially a small refinery. ... Pure oil never comes up." Rather than boring into the seafloor for oil, platforms such as the one that caught fire Thursday pump oil out of existing wells.

The Coast Guard noted that, like other nondrilling rigs, the Mariner Energy platform doesn't have a blowout preventer, a safety device that cuts off an oil well in case of failure. The blowout preventer at BP's Deepwater Horizon wellhead famously failed, allowing millions of barrels of oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico after the April oil rig explosion.

Workers from the Mariner Energy oil rig that burned Thursday are dropped off at a hospital in Houma, Louisiana, that afternoon.

To evacuate the rig, all 13 workers donned special, buoyant suits, bobbing in the Gulf of Mexico until they were rescued by a rig-supply ship.

U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Peter Troedsson told reporters Thursday afternoon that none of the workers were seriously injured.

Discovery Channel
A gunman police shot to death after he took hostages at Discovery Channel's headquarters said he hated the company's shows such as "Kate Plus 8" because they promote population growth and its environmental programming because it did little to save the planet.

two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard — escaped unhurt after the four-hour standoff Wednesday in Silver Spring, just outside the nation's capital. After several hours negotiating with the gunman, tactical officers moved in when authorities monitoring him on building security cameras saw him pull out a handgun and point it at a hostage, said Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing said authorities had identified James J. Lee as the suspect, but police had not released the gunman's identity.

It wasn't the first time Lee, a homeless former Californian, had targeted Discovery's headquarters. In February 2008, he was charged with disorderly conduct for staging a "Save the Planet Protest." In court and online, he had demanded an end to Discovery Communications LLC's shows such as TLC's "Kate Plus 8" and "19 Kids and Counting."

Instead, he said, the network should air "programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility."

"Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding cultures," Lee wrote in a bitter manifesto on his website.

Lee, 43, also objected to Discovery's environmental programming. He wrote in 2008 that a show he called "Planet Green" was "about more PRODUCTS to make MONEY, not actual solutions."
